How does solar power work?
The solar panels capture the sun’s energy. The photovoltaic (PV) cells on the solar panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. There is an inverter that is part of your solar system that converts DC into alternating current (AC) electricity. Then the electrical panel sends power to your home for lights, appliances, and more. The utility meter measures the energy you use and the amount you send back to the grid. When your solar power system produces more power than you need, it feeds the power back into the electricity grid.
Are Traditional Electricity Prices Going Up?
Prices vary depending on your location and your provider but overall energy prices in Texas are predicted to rise 3% per year over the next 5-7 years. Demand has increased dramatically over the last several years, population is increasing quickly and in 2016 Texas shut down 6 of their biggest (and oldest) coal power plants.
Do you recommend an Energy Provider?
YES! Once we do a consultation on your homes solar potential we can help find the right energy plan for you to maximize your solar credits & cost savings. Currently, Green Mountain Energy & Reliant both offer $1 for $1 payments for excess solar energy production.
How long will my solar panels last?
The manufacturer offers a 25-year standard solar power warranty, which means that power output should not be less than 90% of rated power after 25 years. Our partners also offer 20-year warranty on the system installation.
Is there Financing Available?
YES! Texas Solar Designs works with several finance companies to offer our customers the best solar loan program. These products are designed specifically for solar and our goal is to always have you saving money from Day 1! Check out our Financing page for more Information.
Will my Solar Panels work during a Power Outage?
Unfortunately No, not without a fully charged backup battery. Solar systems that are tied to the Grid are required to shut down during a power outage. This is a safety precaution put in place to protect the utility company’s employees. If you are interested in having/adding a solar battery backup please let us know and your design consultant can provide the necessary information.
Do Solar Systems add value to my Home?
YES! According to the Texas A&M University, Real Estate Center your home’s value is increased between $1-$5 per watt installed depending on your location. In Texas, we estimate that value is around $3 per watt installed.
Do Solar Panels require Maintenance?
In Short No! Solar panels even over long periods of time will require little to no maintenance – No need to wash or dust. However if an event occurs that causes the panels to be obstructed from debris, tree limbs etc that obstruction will need to be removed.
Will Insurance cover my Solar System?
YES! Once your solar system is installed be sure to notify your insurance company. Most of the time there will be no change in your policy premium. In fact the most we have ever seen a policy increased is $50 a year.
Will my HOA allow Solar Panels to be installed?
YES! There is a Texas law that allows a homeowner to install solar regardless of an HOA’s rules. However, we like to be a good neighbor so we will always work with your HOA to find a solution and develop a process. In fact, most neighborhoods already have a home with solar so the process is simple.
What if Hail or other Acts of God Damage my system?
Our Solar Panels are extremely durable and can withstand up to baseball size hail going 85mph. Solar Panel damage from hail is extremely rare. However, if damage were to occur your system is covered by your insurance policy.
Who handles the permitting, connection and HOA process?
Texas Solar Designs and our partners will handle all aspects of permits with the city, abiding by HOA guidelines, set up with the utility provider and connect the system to the electrical grid.
How do the panels look?
We use sleek “black on black”, low profile panels that are most attractive on the market.
What happens if I sell my house?
No problem! If you have financed the system the loan is easily transferrable. Solar homes bring equity and are more appealing in the marketplace. Plus it’s cheaper for the buyer to have an energy efficient system over traditional systems.
